You mean the adventure genre? My take is that the adventure genre started out with text adventures, and then along came graphic adventures. Once that happened, they merged with the action game genre and became the action-adventure genre. Since then, most action games will have some puzzle elements and this is a nod to adventure games. In short, the genre merged with action titles to become what we think of as major videogame titles today.
