Yes, you could say that about Gamecube; it was more or less PS2 junior - the bulk of its library were mostly ports of PS2 and Dreamcast games; and only a few of those could be considered top PS2 games, the vast majority of the best PS2 games never made it to Gamecube. Resident Evil 4 was the only really great one, and the Wii version is the definitive version.
Library wise; Gamecube vs Wii. Most of the top Gamecube games have better versions on the Wii. I also feel that Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 alone are superior to the entire Gamecube lineup combined. |
Actually, Resident Evil 4 is a GameCube game ported to the PS2. That definitive Wii version you speak of is pretty much the PS2 version with pointer controls. Whoo.
I think the GameCube was a better system library-wise over the Wii. Most of the Wii's exclusives are lame-ass casual games and none of the cross-platform games are better than the versions on the Xbox360 or PS3... or for that matter, the PS2 or PSP. The Wii, like the GameCube, gets a lot of PS2 (and PSP) ports, but unlike the GameCube, the games are no longer of much substantial quality. Where once the GameCube and PS2 would get generally identical versions of Call of Duty, now the Wii gets the crappy version. You want the best versions of any multiplatform games these days, you certainly don't go to the Wii over the Xbox360 or PS3.
The GameCube had the worst Zelda and Mario games, but the best Metroid titles, three great Resident Evil games designed for the system, and was the birthplace of Viewtiful Joe and Killer7. Birthplace of Pikmin, featured Eternal Darkness (one of the greatest games ever), and the best version of Soulcalibur II. What kind of awesome Soulcalibur game did the Wii get? Oh right. Gun, True Crime, Mortal Kombat, Metal Arms, Medal of Honor (when it was good), Call of Duty, and so many others. Super Monkey Ball, Rogue Squadron II and III. Does the Wii have F-Zero or StarFox? Fuck no. Unless you count N64 downloads. The main things the Wii has over the GameCube are Sin & Punishment 2, two excellent Mario titles (over Sunshine), and the best Kirby game, probably ever.
Just sayin. The GameCube kicked ass.
