I think that the main problem of FFXIII is not the linearity but the lack of incentives to keep the gamer playing. I loved FFXIII, but I think that I would like even more if I knew what is the reason to fight against the enemies who were put on your front.

i didn like for the same reason, its like i was being forced down the dugeons in a straight line, so i could watch the cutscenes. the problem was there was the cutscenes were so boring, just about the characters giving monologues and arguing with each other, there was no substance behind the world or mythology behind the quest.

and the reason you would keep running in a straight line was so you could watch the next cutscene, there was nothing else in the game to incentivise you to play. i actully fell asleep during the beggining of Lake Bresha, i forced myself to stay awake and finish that dungeon man. which is why FF13-2 is a bargain bin buy if anything.
