While I understand your point, and it's a valid one, you have to remember that Sony has attempted far more media formats than just Blu-Ray and Betamax. Remember the mini-disc? Didn't work out so well. And let's not even talk about UMD movies, which were out before Blu-Ray. I know it's not 100% the same situation, but that's why people were doubting it.
