There's a game for the original Gameboy called Gargoyle's Quest. It starred one of the bosses from Ghost's N Goblins but this game was better than any game from that series. It was like Castlevania with RPG elements. I'll post the youtube review when I get home (if I don't forget.) You wouldn't believe the Gameboy could pull this one off-vit was so ahead of its competition.
There was an even better sequel for the Snes called Demon's Crest. It was right there with Super Metroid as far as music, atmosphere, and exploration. The best example of the "Metroid-Vania" style that I could find outside of the two big guns in this genre. Look at the youtube videos for these games and hope that they become Virtual Arcade titles someday!
