They don't say whether his brother could swim. If he could, then that makes even less sense.

Why should he know how to swim? Other articles about this say he didn't like water and some people just don't learn. 

What makes less sense? That the boy made sure his younger brother was saved first or that a 10 year old boy might have been able to out swim a flood able to wash away a car? Don't take away from his sacrifice.

In articles it does say the mother was trapped too.

Knowing how to swim is an important survival skill that kids should learn. It's like knowing to dial 911. I am not taking away from his sacrifice, merely noting that swimming is something kids should learn regardless of whether they like water.
