Well it seems your mom was a very selfless woman, a rare quality nowadays, probably more present in her time, but still, with the way you say her life started, it shows great strenght to have managed to turn this way.
My girlfriend is a bit like that (minus the bad childhood), but I force her to be more selfish...cause nowadays you just get screwed over if you're too nice to everyone :-/
