I want to make it clear: when I talk about brand, I mean something artificial. The "Blu" in Blu Ray is branding. Why not Blue Ray? Removing that "e" takes a product from generic (a disk that is read with a blue laser) to branded ("the future is blu!").

There were similar problems with CDs and DVDs, but they existed to a far lesser extent, lesser than with HDDVDs anyway. With something like a media disk, what should be advertised to consumers is the product it holds, not the physical medium. CDs were advertised because they held music. DVDs were advertised because they held video. The format war, Blu Ray more than HDDVD (who certainly isn't blameless either) has been working to turn this around. It pisses me off.
