One big difference is that we (Sweden and Finland) have proportional  systems, where your vote is not "wasted" as long as the party that you vote for gets over the "percentage treshold" for parliament.

I wonder how it would have been in the US - a proportional system - with the opportunity for more radical (both left and right) parties to enter the arena.
