Any advice for someone who wants to get into a fighting series?

So I really want to get into playing fighting games, but I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions for beginner fighting games to play? I do own Soul Calibur 1 for DC and Soul Calibur 2 for GCN. Also, is it worth investing into arcade pads?
