Why in the land of platforming (Japan) LBP failed so miserably?

The original LittleBigPlanet was a new IP, whose main appeal is creating levels and content.  It is by a company, and on the Playstation brand, which isn't know for platformers the way Nintendo's systems are.  Will need to see how LBP2 does.
