Initially the PS2 was considered a massive headache to figure out for devs.
It launched at 299. Same price as most launches (give or take).
It may have been weaker, but it's only because it launched long before the other 2. It was stronger than the DC because DC was older, so same rule applies.
You seem to exist in a world that has no memory of the first two years of the console's life.
