Mass Effect is such a mess of game, that it's not even worth dragging myself through all it's technical issues and poor designs just so I can 'truly' understand it's story. I've got it on my 360 and the game just drags, not because the world and plot isn't interesting, but because the game semi freezes just when I'm turning around and the gameplay is just so wonky.
I might buy Mass Effect 2 on the PS3, only because I'd rather play the critically acclaimed sequel, without going through the broken original, while also getting the chance to understand the plot and make the choices from the first game.
It's hard to pass up such a highly praised game and I'm willing to put my money down if it means that I won't have to go through Mass Effect 1.

so you got a way through ME1, gave up but never bought ME2 for the 360? but now will buy it for the PS3? odd.

I never could finish the first game on PC. it's full of so many isssues that hindered my enjoyment to the point where I gave up. I hear the second one is an imporvement (especially the combact) but I never bothered to check because I never finished the first. I read about ME2 but I am not sure if I want to play it but If I decided to, this comic me1 could be useful.
EDIT: he replied with similar explanation.
