The system was cracked in a deliberate effort to restore functionality that Sony took away in the first place. Geohot and failoverflow, the two most responsible for the crack, have both said that they do not condone piracy.
Piracy may come from this hack, but that's Sony's fault. They punished legitimate Linux users due to a potential for piracy. Linux users took back what they paid for, and now there is definitely going to be piracy.
Sony has nobody but themselves to blame.
