Idk, can't speak for your country but in my experience even in Brazil it seems that people who never go to the army think it's terrifying while people that actually went have generally positive things to say. Then again even though the service is compulsory not everyone serves (most people go to the reserve and get no real training or anything) and when drafting there's an interview at the end and they tend to choose poeple who actually want to go in.

We need the Sun to survive. The army pretty much does the opposite.

In this less-than-ideal world, we (as separate countries) do need armys.
And the Sun does cause destruction too. It's also less than ideal.
