There is now over 50 Million Xbox 360 and 5 million Kinect Worldwide

I'm new and confused.  Is the 50 million units actual Xbox 360's being used, or total purchased, because I have multiple friends that have gone threw 3-4 Xbox 360 life cycles.  Maybe you could clear this up for me.
