And now, the end is here... And so we face, the final curtain...

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

OMG! He put the predictable game at #1! How could he!!!!!!1111!!!!!111!!!1 Even Link is astonished!

The answer is, quite easily, because when I started this list, I could not think of any argument for any other game being placed above this masterpiece. The funny thing is, I might not have ended up playing it but for a bizarre twist of fate. The game was delayed, it was approaching Christmas 1998, and I wanted to ask for it, but I thought it wouldn't make its release date, so I chose something else instead. I honestly cannot remember what this something else was now, but whatever it was, that ended up being delayed, OoT was released, and I got it that Christmas. Thus followed one of the best Christmas breaks I ever had...

This game is so good that I pity those who missed out on it at the time, who went back to playing it on the say of friends years later, but who did not feel the same impact that they might have had they played it on release. And those people do exist, as unfortunate as they are. There are always a few on every forum like this one.

There are so many moments that make this a worthy #1, but the one that has always stuck with me as the single best moment in video game history was after you complete the first part of the game, and you're going to Hyrule Castle. The moment you step out on to Hyrule Field, and it opens up in front of you, and you realise just how big this game is as the music kicks in... That did it for me right there.

Ultimately, OoT reminds me what gaming should be about. The thrill of adventure, the joy of exploration, and the emotional investment in the story (and the fact that I still hum the odd Ocarina tune every now and then some 12 years later). So many other games try to do this, but none do it like OoT. And that's why it's my number 1.
