If Piracy is the prime cause of the PSP's problems then why isn't the same happening to the DS which is far easier to pirate? Wouldn't it be possible that people are just buying it primarily as a mobile media device with free services instead of a game playing device?

PSP buy more advanced users, while DS buy more casual people, which play such games like brain training, nintendo dogs and etc. Usually besides those games, they can buy 2-3 normal games, which cost almost same as M3 card + 4GB flash card.

I don't (necessarily) agree with that ...

Much like the Dreamcast at the end of its life, people who are interested in the PSP as a gaming device are buying it primarily because you can easily steal games with no modification of the system. It sounds odd, but if 40% of people who are buying your system are buying it because games are "free", 20% are buying it because of its multimedia functionality, there really isn't that many people left to buy games.

Exactly.   If the PSP wasn't eaisly piratable, more PSP games wouldn't sell (or the bump would be pretty negligable.)  Instead PSP  hardware sales would drop.
