Hello more space for better encoding, unscratchable discs (far more important than your whiney complaint), and just 1 standard. The region coding is much better than DVDs, as others have stated.

Important is a relative term. Just because you may scratch a lot of disc doesn't mean other people do, just as some may enjoy the freedom to import movies.

I don't scratch discs, people at blockbuster do.  Scratched discs are the worst part of disc media.  Blu-ray is nearly impossible to ruin.

The region for USA includes Japan, which is what most people mean when they say they import.  Most European titles will be released here anyway.
