| Sensei said: I think a safe prediction is that Nintendo will be still around. Nintendo is so damn strong, and for so much time! Too bad I don't like their consoles much since the Super NES. Sega coming back is wishful thinking... I'm pretty sure they won't even though I would still buy their console. Sony and Microsoft are the big question marks. I like them both, though, and I hope they manage to stay. I love download-only. I don't like discs, if download-only became the norm I'd like it... but I think it might not. |
I personally think we will see a slow and steady progression away from physical media to digital download over the next several generations. With internet bandwith being so slow (in general), hard drives being so small, and the expected data requirements for next generation being so large the primary delivery method for games will still be on disc; but I also think that console manufacturers will (probably) create services similar to steam to deliver these same "on disc" games digitally. If these services are popular, I would expect the next generation of consoles to be primarily digital; and the following generation to only have a disc drive for backwards compatibility.
