FFVIII was also pretty polarizing, as was MGS2 and The Wind Waker.  The most polarizing games usually have a "return to form" response following immediately afterwards (ie: ALTTP, FFIX, MGS3, Twilight Princess).

Actually, both Zelda and Super Mario 2 were very loved at their time. The myth of them being hated was created by hardcore people who didn't like them as the others around the last 3 generations.

Hells naw.  There were WARS on the playground over Zelda II, it was very much love / hate with gamers (ie: kids!) in the late 80s.  I lived through it, I know! :P
