Format wars, while they can help prices go down, normally have other negative impacts due to the confusion they sow.
Electronics prices always go down pretty quickly anyway even without a format war - as adoption grows its matched by rapid price drops and it becomes a volume (versus premium price) game. Also, lower production costs also help drive the drop.
