For my birthday this year I actually bought myself a bottle of Macallan 18.

That is a lot of dough for a bottle of Scotch. In Cali, we have BevMo! the Wal-Mart of liquor stores and BevMo! sells 18 yr Macallan for around $150 online.

Is the older Scotch better than the younger?

That's about what it is here, though I found it on sell so I got it for about $130 which is still a lot but it was for my birthday.

And yes, the older the scotch, the better it is.  I've had the 12, 15, 18, and 25 year Macallan and they're all amazing and only get better with age.  The barrel they're matured in also has a lot to do with how they taste.  I'm a giant Macallan whore so that's generally what I stick to but I only like the ones aged in the sherry oak barrels, not the fine oak.

Speaks nothing but truth right here.

I'm very partial to Macallan myself.   I've not had the 25 yet but am working acquiring a bottle.  The 18 and cask strengths being my favorites thus far.

Following the Macallan, I'll take Glenmorangie, McClelland's (Islay) and Glenlevit.

And or all those considering scotch for the first time, single malt is the only way to go.
