Just checked the sales of this and it did 1.87 mil combined. for a new IP at the time, i would say thats a solid number. so i'm not sure why Sony never got round to a sequel. i mean something like Sly Cooper sold less, got 2 sequels and a HD rerelease. loads of new games probabily sell less than that and are considered successful.
eg, Demon's Souls was a success when it did 0.5mil WW. i think the only reason for no sequel was probabily the measure of success at the time for an RPG - FF7. maybe it was also expensive because of the size and scale.
