Its not about fear, but if they can iscolate Gears 3 in a time that is not around other big releases, then that is preferable. Many gamers plan to buy alot of those games releasing in November (myself included) and if Gears 3 were to come out amidst those games, (even though I am a huge Gears fan) the game would have to wait a month or two.
The question of whether the games are in the same genre as gears is only partially relevant. Most people have a gaming budget and somethings gotta give.
Sales will be way more frontloaded and overall higher if they avoid the rest of the shuffle of games that already have concrete release dates.
