Well I think that would depend on which country you live in. In maybe Somalia or another poor country where less then 10% have jobs yes it would be advantageous to be a slave and get your room and food paid for. But in most developed and even many developing countries it is not.
A man in a developed country can work where he chooses, if he can't find work the state will help him do so and in the meantime prop him up with welfare as you speak of. Even being homeless in Canada is better then being a slave, shelters are everywhere and church's and aid groups will feed you. If you want work then you can apply for low income housing and help finding a job from the Gov.
I myself would rather live on the streets then be a slave treated the way modern slaves are treated. Forced to screw or work in louzy conditions well getting fed scraps and spoiling food.
