To actually answer your question, no the $500 million is not all going to be spent this holidays. That would be crazy. I think the punditry is suggesting 500 million over the first 12 months of the product's life.
I think the less commonly held opinion about GT5 was that it would be a system seller. People suggesting those who wanted GT5 already mostly bought GT5P. Given how close PS3 sales are this year compared to last year I think GT5 is good for several thousands of PS3 sales each week.
