We have conscription here in Brazil and it's not like we'd expect to need it more than the USA, to me it's surprising some people are surpirsed by it :P
On-topic, I don't know much about the policy, but I guess it should be done. I can see how this can create some disconfort to both "sides", but if people could get fired for it then it was too much.
