Lets see if I can think of some good reasons:
- Simplify the connectors, just one HDMI plug vs 3 composite which can be plugged in wrong.
- Games look better when they are scaled to the LCDs native resolution.
- Increases the longevity of the Wii if they intend to keep it on the market.
- Increasing the internal memory and storage increases the internet and media streaming options.
- They could start building a better online network with applications and games from 3rd parties.
Hows that for 5 decent reasons for a Wii HD?
