No you wouldn't nessisairly be dead if it was a tumor.
I had a friend who had something like that for years that was a tumor and it had to be removed.
Just not one that would kill you.

Derminus Cysts are considered tumors. I don't think it's actually anything life threatening. It's worth getting looked out can never be too careful with your health, because at the end of the day it's the most important thing.
