This depends on what you mean by franchise? Franchise is generally more then one title. As such I can think of three newer franchises. Pikmin, Animal Crossing and CustumRobo. Now their are others like BattalionWars, Nintendogs and Brain Training that came out more recently.
I think Nintendo right now is focused on existing IP's whether they are forgotten or used alot. Take Kid Icarus for example their hasn't been a KI game in over 10 years. Metroid Prime their hadn't been a Metroid game in a long time.
Also I remember Nintendo launching Giest and Eternal Darkness during the GameCube era. I think if studios like Retro decide they want to make a new IP I don't think Nintendo would disagree. I have to admit other publishers are launching far more new IP's then Nintendo.
But Nintendo doesn't need to define itself with new IP's like say Microsoft. Even Sony needs fresh blood more then Nintendo. I think Nintendo will do just fine creating 2-3 franchises a generation or two.
