New franchises or new characters?

Mario may be the common character in Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Sports Mix, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario vs DK and Paper Mario but they are all different franchises.

But weren't all of those franchises made before this gen?(excluding Galaxy) I would count sports mix as another mario sports title and new super mario bros, as...well super mario bros. Nintendo does seem to be lacking in creating creative new "hardcore" ips this gen, although I believe Miyamoto(please forgive me if I mispelled his name) claimed to be working on a new series. Its kind of hard to be upset though seeing as most of Nintendo made games are of the highest quality this gen regardless the genre or protaganist

Squilliam sums it up perfectly. On the other hand, I could also argue that all the so-caledd casual Wii series games are the "hardcore" ip for Wii customers.

Also, whenever I see a topic like this, I always have this question. There are gonna be 3 Uncharted and 3 Resistence games this gen in a 4-5 year period and probbaly none next gen. That's better than Nintendo releases old character once each gen with new gameplays?

Last, as long as the ip sells, any companies would re-use it every single gen.(see Halo, Gran Turismo etc)

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
