Same here, nothing beats playing a racing game while hearing the full blown sound of the engine coming out from your 5.1 system 
Also, not counting only that factor, there are events in GT5 which almost need that you concentrate on your engine noise, to get a feeling of your shifting times, avoiding constant visualization of the HUD that could make you lose precious hundreds of seconds.
