But the UE3 of today is not the same that came out in 2006, either. It's been updated a lot when it comes to lighting engine, worker threads for assets streaming, alpha and particle rendering with AA, etc.
It has little to do with how "modern" the engine is per se, as I'm sure the guys at Epic will want to showcase all the latest improvements in Gears 3 and are working on it right now in 2010, and has more to do with how focused - as opposite to general purpose - each engine is.
