I think its sorta funny people suggesting Splatter House and Dante. But what I gather is other then liscensed movie games and lego games their really isn't much. I did suggest to him that he buy a Wii instead, though he never replied to my email.
I myself grew up on the Atari2600 and NES around 3-6 yr old. I grew up playing Donkey Kong and MarioBros on the 2600 and later all of Nintendo's great games on the NES. I of course would suggest Nintendo for any parent as the games can be enjoyed by everyone, its not sheltered its just innocent fun.
Personally I'd suggest he buy his kid a Wii with Epic Yarn , New Super Mario Bros and other mario games like Mario Kart as well as Wii party. Not to mention Diego and other childrens games.
As for RPGs and difficult games. He's five at five I was good at Mario , Duck Hunt and Donkey Kong Zelda. I couldn't read well enough for an RPG till like grade 2!
