The PS3 cannot, as evidence by the slowdown and abundant screen tearing in GT5.
Besides, most gamers would rather race 8 current generation cars than 1 current gen car and 15 PS2-HD cars. i'm 84 percent positive.
On topic, of course MS/T10 are feeling bullish, they said Forza 3 would be the definitive racing game on consoles. Forza 4 looks like it's going to be definitiver.
