I'm a musician. I'd consider myself more of a song writer then player though. Seems like, for what ever reason, you're either one or the other most of the time. I can write entire songs from start to finish with vocal melodies, but I can't really play for shit outside of your basic chords. I have friends who can play Buckethead stuff, but they can't create vocal melodies for shit. It's weird.

Anywho..glad to see there are other musicians here.

hah, thats so true .  Its best to have a little of both worlds.

I personally am more on the side of your friend when it comes to musical approach. I preffer to work with drummer and bass player to write the song parts, fix arangements...and then put vocals and melodies in to the song. For metal this is usually the best approach... But most other types of music revolve around the vocals so melodies and vocal lines are much more improtant than musical trickery

I think it has to do with how you aproach music. The guy that I was talking about, who can play Buckethead stuff, when he was young I remember him taking his guitar, locking himself in his bedroom and learning how to play Master Of Puppets note for note. I don't think he left his fucking bedroom for like, 3 months lol. We never saw the guy. He had become obbsessed with being that good at it.

Me on the other hand, I always idolized Kurt Cobain. I didn't really care so much about playing good as I did trying to write songs. All of my time spent with my guitar was trying to write little songs with vocals...even if they were shitty or comical. After a few years, I got better and better just like my friend did, only I got better at making music instead of being great on the fret board.

I really don't think it's possible for someone to master both unless they're like, SRV or something. It takes years and years to do one or the other so time spent on one is time taken away from the other etc.

Sounds like something that happened to me, I learned guitar just to make songs and play while I sing, which was the thing I did before. But I have a friend who is obsessed with playing the most hard songs he can find and doing it perfectly, in guitar and also in piano.
