I really don't expect another huge meltdown like that until an entirely new generation of gamers take the floor. The reason it was so huge (the FFXII going multi I mean) was because it was really unexpected, and because it came at a time where Sony supporters where desperate for an exclusive game to rival the 360's library.
I think Sony supporters aren't as emotional to exclusives being lost after that bomb. 360 supporters had a similar loss like ME2, the meltdowns were just as fun. I think it's Nintendo turn to feel the pain now!
An answer to the direct title: Yes it was extremely overhyped seeing how the game isn't good.
