The only to 100% guarantee that you get the Red Ring of Death is to buy an awesome game. Not just a good game, an awesome game. When you do finally get that game you've been dreaming about for months, that one game that has your heart beating fast with anticipation, say out loud "This is going to be so cool!" I promise you, you'll get the RRoD.
Of course, there are times when the system will just conk out just to spite you. If that happens, it just means that you're not sexy. I did the research. I'm not making this stuff up.
