Totally agree with the OP, only i think if you look at the PS2, it will be a bit longer than 10 years, maybe 15 althogether.
the problem i think people dont realise is that from a buisness sense, Microsoft and Sony are getting beaten by a console, thats what? over 10 years out of date; the Wii. the mass consumer certainly dosent care for the hardware specs or graphics. so why are MS and Sony going to release new hardware with higher power thresholds, when their current hardware is being outsold, by a much weaker console.
and the other thing is the games, the reason the PS2 became obsolete is because of the advent of HD and hardware that could do something, much, much more powerful. at the moment the hardware is out of date from a PC standpoint, but its fit for purpose, because PC gaming is too expensive for the general consumer, including myself.
the size of the blu ray, and the ability of HD, means developers can make games like FF13 or Demon's Souls; of about 100 hours in HD quality with huge scale and scope. i dont see the point of new consoles, because its just a graphical improvement in this, and imo theres a point now (like in GT5), where some things look better than real life, so imo PS3 is going noware soon. oh and the developers havent unlocked the full power of the console imo.
