I honestly don't see this becoming a reality on the PS3. PS4 maybe. The reason is simple. There is no decent external interconnection bus that can meet the needs of taking loads off the SPEs. Internal caching will help, but eventually the external device would have to post it's results back to the SPE running the program thread, which would be running millions of times faster than say the USB bus.

If PS4 is shipped with some kind of special internal interconnect bus, that interfaces direct to the memory/CPU bus, then I'd see it as a distinct possibility.
