Vastly underperformed? What were the sales expectations?
Here in the US, I was really interested but it not being available on Verizon yet killed a purchase this year. And I'm sure I'm not alone, as a ton of people here are on Verizon and Sprint.
As for the announcing sales numbers, I don't care. Whatever they are will be compared, not to the initial launch of the iPhone or the G2, but to current iPhone and Android sales, all for the purpose of FUD ...

Anyway.. there was a conference called "D: Dive into Mobile" 2 days ago where people expected that MS would announce the numbers.. but they didn't and dodged all the questions about it.. MS expects to sell 30 million phones at the end of 2011.. 4.2 million of that in 2010.. MS has a 100 million ad campaign for WP7.. estimates have it on 40.000 on launch day and let's just say rival phones for other companies had 1 million plus launch days..
WP7 is pretty slick, We at the office like it, but a lot of developers are on standby to jump in.. it depends on the sales of the device and the users of it.. a lot of companies made the mistake for seeing the android market the same as the iOS market thus making the same apps with the same money model.. as it turned out the android market is vastly different (people don't actually buy apps) then the iOS (people buy apps and lots of them). Which cost us a lot of money.. So now the android apps are build with a lot of in app advertsing cause that turns out to be the better money making system for Android.. with the lack of WP7 numbers we as a company just don't know what to do then wait so we won't make the same mistake twice..

Do you have a link for those sales expectations? The 2011 is kinda hard to judge, because I don't think ANYONE predicted that Android would sell as well as it has in 2010 a year ago. I'm pretty sure that they'll announce holiday/2010 sales after they are done. Regardless, apples to apples, you can't compare RECENT OR CURRENT sales of iPhone or Android to someone that is basically just entering the new smartphone market.
I've been reading more and more about the ad based model and how it can likely be very fruitful for WP7 app devs too. There are going to be many that miss out, though, on the benefit of having a such a small number of competitors (count is around 3500 apps as of now). Its almost impossible to stand out in the AppStore anymore.
