Very true. One case from the 2010 elections is health care. Many Republicans ran on repealing health care reform, but this will not happen. Even if they could pass it initially, Obama would veto the bill, and there is no chance they could get the 2/3's majority needed to over-ride the veto. They will either need to compromise to make some changes or make a largely symbolic stand that won't change the bill but might appease their constituents.
