I think his post is largely pointing out the long-known fact that what makes game systems great is the games, not the systems themselves. And he's right, too; if system specs were what determined a system's success, then we'd all be singing praises for the Master System over the NES, the CD-i over the SNES, the XBOX over the PS2, and so forth.
I wrote a more analytical-than-example-based article on the matter many months back at the peak of pre-release hype for the Wii and PS3, actually. I doubt many people ever read it, since it's on my barren wasteland of a website. Which is fine with me, as I don't care one way or another about the popularity of my writing. I mostly do it for myself.
