Also why was there so much secrecy over how the damage system works? If polyphony had just come out and said "hey damage gets unlocked as you go up in levels" all this controversy would have ended and we wouldn't still be having threads about the subject.

I think this was mainly because Damage wasn't in the plans of GT5 until late in development, after much bickering and annoyance from a vocal group of fans and media about it. In my case, I never was an apologist of damage, since I race in GT5 and any other simulator not to damage my car, but to drive as smoothly and bump-free as I can.
Heck I can finish a race in GTR-2, Forza 3 and many other sims without even a single scratch, unfortunately, from my experience as well, I've found that the majority of people (especially online) just seem to want to crash into you as much as they can.

I agree that the point of racing should be not to crash but damage is an essential part of a sim. If you're in a 100 lap race and someone slams their car full speed into a wall they can easily get back into the race after a couple laps without damage. I believe they should be penalized for being careless by having their car damaged.
