The hackers are making custom software but it is the kinect itself that is tracking the movements of the person in 3D space and converting it into digital information. The hackers are simply taking that information and applying it to their own software.

Also you are severely underselling how hard it is to make a 3D capable tracking camera. You need far more than just two IR cameras and some software, not to mention the software has to be quite advanced.

Also what were you trying to prove with that link? Unless I read it wrong all that is showing is how to make a camera that can take 3D pictures, it has nothing to do with a camera that can track movement in 3D space.

I think you are ridiculously underestimating how difficult it is to make software capable of tracking specific body parts like head, arms, fingers and legs in 3D space. This is not something that can be done by some amateur hacker.

If it is so easy can you show me a video or article of someone using a wiimote to create a 3D camera with full body tracking, I am honestly curious?

not quite as sophisticated as kinect but

Once hackers start porting over the kinect libraries the tech should come in leaps and bounds

I should clarify I do think that Natal (especially the libraries they developed) is an impressive piece of tech but it's not exactly unique or un emulatable it is esentailly a webcam a couple of IR cameras and some very impressive libraries.

I admit that first video is quite impressive. However what he did is not trivial and is very limited, if you pay attention he mentions in the video that the hand recognition only works in a very limited range and that it is not very precise. Like I said it is impressive but not something that is practical.

I have no idea what the point of the second video was, he was just mapping an animated character over pre-recorded skeletal points, that has nothing to do with our conversation.

Finally the 3rd video is impressive and I have seen it before but in that video only a single point is being tracked. The whole point of Kinect is that it can track your whole body.

I never said you can't do impressive things with the wiimote but they are not interchangeable pieces of technology as Metralha keeps trying to say they are. Both are good at their specific tasks.
