People have different tastes. I do agree with you, but you have to bear in mind that you read books in different paces. Somebody might be bored if the story starts slow and leavea a bad first impression.

I having trouble reading Joyce's Ulysses, a reason might be that I'm as a non native speaker have problems with old english. On the other hand I may have spent just a couple of days with the Millenium trilogy. Even though I enjoyed the latter, I don't dare to say it's better than Joyce's masterpiece.

That's pretty much my point. There are plenty of trashy or mediocre novels/games/movies that I've enjoyed immensely but one has to keep perspective and admit that you enjoyed those for personal reasons, not because they're actually better than some of the greatest classics ever written/filmed.
