You may have had a time where your team is absolutely decimating the other team, and you are having a particularily good match. Then the server operator (most likely on the losing team) decides you're doing too good and bans you so his team has a better chance. That just happened to me a few minutes ago on a Halo PC match. I don't know the length of the ban (since the game doesn't tell you) but I laughed when the message popped up on my screen.
