Firstly, sales matter. If no one (or very few people, in comparison) played the game, no one (again, very few people) will remember it Wii Sports is drastically new. If any games follow it in later gens, it'll be looked upon as a trendsetter. If they don't, it'll pretty much be regarded as one of a kind. |
1. Yeah, but the fact that 60 million pepole played the game, or 40 million pepole bought the album, or 70 million bought the book means just one thing - if something will be remembered, it will be rememberd for being big in the past, and then... disappearing.
2. Yeah, each new Halo and GT and CoD is more of the same, however, you cannot deny the effects of the first Halo, and to some extent, CoD4, on the gaming world today, they had a big influence, that, for now, seems like it will last longer than Wii Sports influence, however, we can't really know at this point what will happen five years from now.
3. And that's the point, something that's "one of a kind", that has no influence, no real lasting appeal, and doesn't involve pepole emotionally, or mentally, will be remembered as something that just sold a lot.
Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.
