Not all that odd when you consider that VII fans have been lavished with Dirge of Ceberus, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Last Order, and Advent Children over the years. Mind you all of the above releases have been much more well received in Japan than in the West.
Final Fantasy VIII on the other hand has been completely forgotten by Squaresoft/Square Enix since it was ported to the PC in 2000. It's the Final Fantasy that has gone the longest without a related release with IX about 4 months behind it. The Japanese don't seem to share Westerners' infatuation with IX over other Final Fantasy games though which explains the discrepancy.
